Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.
Proverbs 3:27
Today we are taking a break from Acts to give honor to our Moms.
Our text today comes from Proverbs and in Chapter 31 we see the advice from a wise mother to her son, King Lemuel.
Today my big idea/purpose today is to really say thank you to all of our Moms. My prayer today is that by hearing this message together we will be reminded of the gift we have in our Mothers and as a result we will bring praise to God. If you have your Bibles today you can join me as we turn to, Proverbs, chapter 31 starting at verse 25.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
Proverbs 31:25-31
26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
In order to help me share with you today, I have separated my thoughts into 3 sections or points. Let’s take a look at my first point. Regarding these godly women:
She Is Gracious To Her Household
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Proverbs 31:25-27
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
She exhibits strength and dignity. She is confident and trusts in the Lord. A mother cares for the needs of her household. She gives and models good advice. She teaches grace to those around her by her example.
Now you might be thinking that this sounds too good to be true. And surely no one can live up to this all the time. And you are correct. But our Moms get up, usually first, every day and they give their all. Not perfect but gracious and faithful. Just showing up every day makes a world of difference.
Moms we honor you today for all that you do. We pray a special blessing over you today. You cook and clean. Many of you run finances and keep the home up. You are the first place we go for love, comfort, and encouragement. You’re the one that calls us out on all our junk. And some of you do it by yourself, you know who you are.
Let’s move to my second point.
She Is Gracious To Her Family
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
Proverbs 31:28-29
Your presence brings comfort and security. You plan ahead to make sure thing are as they should be. Your family has a good name because of your grace and faithfulness. Children grow and develop according to your care. You work hard and make it look so easy. You make good decisions because your heart is on others and not selfish desires.
Have you ever seen a mom planning a vacation? Some of you have binders and apps on your phone to make sure your family has the best time ever. If you’re ever starving find a mom, because she has snacks in her purse. You’ll be saved.
If you are fortunate enough to still have your mom, tell her thank you. And treat her to something nice if you can. Maybe you just call her to say, “I love you mom.”
“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
Proverbs 31:29
I’ll move to my next point.
She Establishes A Spiritual Heritage
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Proverbs 31:30-31
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
She brings honor to her family because she Honors God. Mom, you have become the biblical standard to which all women aspire. We honor you today. You taught us how to pray. In many cases, you were the first to present to gospel to us. Your nurturing and comforting demeanor foreshadowed the relationship that we would have with the Holy Spirit. You taught us right from wrong.
Mom, your deeds need no illustration. let me brag for a moment about my mom. She worked hard. She wasn’t perfect. But I always knew she loved me. And I knew she loved the Lord. I have never known anyone who prayed with such a fervent emotion. There was no doubt in my mind that Christ was first with my mom. Whatever short comings there may have been my mom made sure we had every advantage to know Jesus.
I close will with this.
On this Mother’s Day let’s be reminded that she is a gift from God, and she is precious. I will say that I am here today largely because of my mother’s prayers. Thank you, mom. And thank you to all of you moms. You are blessed and highly favored. You have been placed here by God and He has made you a rock in our lives. Will you join me as we pray over our moms and moms to be?
“‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’
