Sermon – Pastor Tim – The Getaway

The Getaway

May 11, 2014 – Pastor Tim – “The Getaway”

How many of you would love a vacation? The author of Psalm 139 celebrates the Lord’s constant, caring presence.

Psalm 139:1-5, O Lord, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. 5 You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me.

Even as we dream about a life-changing getaway, the Scriptures remind us of two things we cannot escape!

Psalms 139:9-10, If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me

The two things we cannot escape. One we can’t escape ourselves.  No matter how far or how fast we run, when we turn around, there we are! Environmental chances can only do so much, eventually our old self will show up. Unless we make a spiritual change. Which brings us to the second thing we cannot get away from. We can’t get away from the Lord, either, and that’s good news.  It’s good news because He comes, not to judge, but to save and help.  The cross of Christ proves it!

John 3:16-18, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

When you lie down to sleep at night, Jesus is thinking about how much He loves you.  When you wake up each morning, He is still thinking about that,

Psalm 139:17-18 says, How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.

This is yet one more way to gauge our Lord’s immeasurable love.  Even when you forget or fail to trust Him, He is there for you—leading you to repentance, comforting you in Christ’s cross, lifting your burdens, and bringing you hope.

Psalm 55:22, Cast your burdens on the Lord, and He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

Lord, you are my refuge, my ultimate getaway!
