Sermon – Pastor Tim – I Know God’s Will

I Know God's Will

January 19, 2014 – Pastor Tim – “I Know God’s Will”

Psalm 40:8, I desire to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.

There is a direct connection between finding and doing God’s will and having God’s law in our heart.  I know God’s will…because he wrote it down.

How would you describe the process by which you find and do God’s will in your life? For some, finding God’s will is like playing bumper cars. We keep going in one direction until we bump into an obstacle, turn, and go in another direction. It is a constant process of elimination, failure, or success.

Is this the way God would have us find His will? No, I don’t so, He has a better way.

Psalm 119:9-16,

How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord!
Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have declared
All the judgments of Your mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts,
And contemplate Your ways.
16 I will delight myself in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.

God’s Word is the strongest foundation to knowing God’s will.

Another way we can help to know the will of God, is through prayer. Jeremiah 33:3, ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ When you commune with God and learn what pleases Him.  The Bible says in Colossians 3:15, And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body; and be thankful.

The peace of God is like a regulator.  When we violate the will of God, His peace leaves us and we have inner turmoil, immediately discovering that we are going against God’s will. Knowing God’s Word and knowing the peace that comes through a continuous relationship with Him are the best ways of knowing God’s will.  John 15:4, Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

It is also true that God will show us His will through a number of other means.  He will show us His will through godly counselors.  Proverbs 19:20, Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.

Proverbs 24:6, For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.  We can also discern God’s will in part through circumstances; through the inner voice of the Spirit of God speaking through us; or through visions or dreams.

Acts 2:17, ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,

That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.

He can reveal His will to us in many ways.

The key is to be sure that we are submitted to Him—His Word and are willing to do whatever He shows us.  If we propose to do His will, we will know His leading.

I want God’s will above all else.  None of us want to miss God’s plan and purpose for our lives.  Surrender has the guarantee of His guidance.

Proverbs 3:5-6,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths.
